Is there a way to travel Europe for a year with limited monetary resources?

In about three years I'll have saved about $12k U.S. Dollars (life savings) and I would like to travel Europe while also completing my degree. Does anyone know how best to move about freely in Europe while also watching your money? Ideally, I'd like to live in a different city every 2-3 months.

1. You can travel by hitchhiking. This works especially well in Summer. Germany, Austria and France are safe and good; other countries may vary. In summer you can easily find work; like grape-picking in the south of France. Ask around to see when the season is. In Eastern Europe travelling by bus or train is cheap. No need to hitchhike. Do an internet-search for Europe and/or the countries of your choice, plus the word 'shoestring'. Good luck, lots of fun!
