Best way to travel to Rome, Italy?

I am planning trip to Rome for next summer and I was wondering if anyone has some tips for the cheapest/best way to go there. I may want to travel around Italy a bit, but what is the best way to do this? Where to stay, should we get a package, plus any things you wish you would have done differently if you have travelled there before? Thanks!

1. The best way to travel to Rome is on the Alta Velocita Eurostar train, and the railway is the best way to get around Italy.
